Rocket Lab Completes 100th 3D-Printed Rocket Engine

You could call it one giant leap for 3D printing. California’s Rocket Lab just completed its 100th additive-printed Rutherford Engine as it targets cheaper rocket launches and space missions. The company has been on a tear since it created the world’s first 3D-printed, electric turbo-pump fed engine in 2013. Since then, it's launched 70 Rutherford engines to space with various companies—with the most recent one being on June 29. “The Rutherford engine has played an integral part in enabling Rocket Lab to make frequent and reliable launch a reality for small satellites,” Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck said in a statement. “It’s a testament to our innovative design and manufacturing teams that we’ve achieved everything we set out to do in just a few short years; an entirely new type of rocket engine that delivers unmatched performance, boasts a proven record of 100% launch reliability and can be manufactured quickly and efficiently.” From here, the production is going to step up. The company plans to produce 200 Rutherford engines in the next year, on the back of improved 3D printing facilities in Huntington Beach, California. These engines will launch from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand, and Launch Complex 2 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Wallops Island, Virginia.

EcoRocket is designed around two main features: cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness and it is designed to launch commercial payloads starting with 2021. The EcoRocket Heavy will follow. The first two stages are reusable and are using water-based propulsion technology that generates water vapours through cold reaction. The expandable third stage uses conventional hot rocket propulsion and it's ignited at high altitude, above the thick atmosphere. Both the first and second stage use the high efficiency aerospike engine technology. The whole rocket uses 86% water-based propellant. ARCA already tested this technology at full-scale. EcoRocket is sea-launched, directly from the sea surface, the first sea trials taking place on the Black Sea, in July 2021. EcoRocket is competing in the European Commission's 10 million Euros competition that aim to stimulate the creation of new, small orbital launchers that are cost effective and friendly to the environment.

To assist the safe passage of small craft to and from Portsmouth Harbour a Small Boat Channel for vessels less than 20m in length including Personal Watercraft (PWC) has been created on the western side of the harbour entrance. The 50 metre wide Small Boat Channel is shown on Admiralty charts 2625 and 2631. Its northern and southern extremities are at Ballast Pile (50 47.62N 001 06.83W) and No 4 Bar Buoy (50 46.97N 001 06.48W) respectively. Small boats are reminded that they can be difficult to see and the harbour entrance is a blind bend to larger vessels and traffic leaving the camber. Vessels approaching or departing the small boat channel to the south, should follow the line of the port lateral boys to avoid grounding on the South-East corner of Hamilton bank. The following vessels under 20m in length are authorised to use the main channel and loiter in the Small Boat Channel when their duties require; pilot boats, police launches, QHM Harbour Patrol launches, Border Force craft, Royal Naval vessels, lifeboats, senior officers’ boats flying official flags or discs and tugs engaged in towing operations or escorting a vessel. Small boats may continue to use the Small Boat Channel when the main channel is closed for the passage of a large vessel other than a Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) Aircraft Carrier. The Small Boat Channel will be shut to all traffic during QEC transits.

As an entrepreneur, one of the most important tasks you can perform is getting your idea(s) out from your head into a tangible format so that you can communicate that with others. In the past, this usually meant a well-researched business plan, that would usually take weeks (more like months) to create. I turn to the Lean Canvas to help me quickly formulate possible business models, product launches, campaigns and variations of, and communicate this with my stakeholders for my Lead Flow Method work. Having the Lean Canvas as a visual guide made this part “communicating the model/idea” so much more effective — and I think the most valuable function of the tool. The problem with business plans for startups & entrepreneurs are that they’re a waste of time, don’t get me wrong a well-researched business plan is important but only at the right stage of your business (usually when you’re in growth/investment). This quote from Steve Blank sums up this point in case: “Business Plan: a document investors make you write, that they don’t read”. The key fundamental to Lean methodology is the elimination of waste — this includes time, processes, inventory and more. I can't turn bluetooth on with a dongle plugged in, unless I issue the command "sudo service bluetooth restart". This occurs when the dongle has been plugged in on starting up (I need to use a wired keyboard to log in), or when I plug in the dongle later. The dongle in question is the one attached at the time of the bug report (which was just after I issued the bluetooth restart command). This is similar to Bug #762964 and #700292, but it isn't fixed yet with the latest updates installed (I believe my kernel version is the same as the kernel updates mentioned that fix it in some instances).
