(CNN)If you're sick and tired of arriving home after a hard day at work to find yet another online delivery has gone AWOL, then a new autonomous delivery vehicle could soon be here to help. Kar-go is the brainchild of the United Kingdom-based Academy of Robotics, which describes it as "Europe's first road-worthy autonomous delivery vehicle." Using AI, this autonomous delivery vehicle offers customers an app -- similar to one used when ordering a taxi -- allowing them to choose when and where their packages are delivered. Earlier this year, Chinese startup Neolix also began mass production of its own autonomous vans, while in Houston last month, Domino's Pizza partnered with self-driving company Nuro to deliver takeaway food to customers' doors.

We have talked about Pasi William Sachiti a few time in the past. We have been impressed by his UK startup, Academy of Robotics which has been working on Kar-go, a driverless car to solve the last mile delivery problem. The last time we talked about Sachiti and Kar-go, he had just successfully raised funding for the innovation via a crowdfunding platform. The autonomous vehicle was launched last week and it was hosted at two glamorous events in the UK. Kar-go was part of the Duke of Richmond’s Festivals of Speed (FOS). This is when the Duke hosts motoring enthusiasts from around the world who flock to see the latest concept cars to classics. A new addition to the show is what is called, the FOS Future Lab which has become a centre piece of the event. This is where Sachiti’s car was featured.

Fast Artificial Neural Network Library is a free open source neural network library, which implements multilayer artificial neural networks in C with support for both fully connected and sparsely connected networks. Cross-platform execution in both fixed and floating point are supported. It includes a framework for easy handling of training data sets. It is easy to use, versatile, well documented, and fast. Bindings to more than 15 programming languages are available. An easy to read introduction article and a reference manual accompanies the library with examples and recommendations on how to use the library. Several graphical user interfaces are also available for the library.

The study of artificial arms and hands began in 1967 incorporating the technological assets gained from developing the active prostheses started three years before. The studies had at first aimed only to develop machines to perform manual labor in lieu of persons and emphasized development of artificial hand mechanisms. Recently the aim has been to develop robots which can perform intelligent work as well as manual labor.

Valentino Braitenberg is a cybernetician, a neuroanatomist, and a musician. He seeks to understand how the beautiful structures of the brain constitute a machine that can enable us to exhibit such skilled behavior as that involved in playing music. Since the early 1960s, I have turned to Valentino for detailed neuroanatomy and for lively essays that cut away the technical details to illuminate the key issues of what we may call cybernetics or artificial intelligence or cognitive science.

Dylan Evans is the author of several popular science books, including Emotion: The Science of Sentiment (Oxford University Press, 2001) and Placebo: The Belief Effect (HarperCollins, 2003). After receiving his PhD in Philosophy from the London School of Economics, he did postdoctoral research in philosophy at King’s College London and in robotics at the University of Bath before moving the University of the West of England (UWE) where he was Senior Lecturer in Intelligent Autonomous Systems. He left UWE in July 2006 to conduct an innovative project in sustainable living in the Scottish Hightlands called the Utopia Experiment. In January 2008 he returned to academia, taking up the post of Senior Research Scientist at the Department of Computer Science, University College Cork, Ireland, where he did research on decision theory and risk management. In September 2008 he moved to the School of Medicine, also at University College Cork, where he is now Lecturer in Behavioural Science

This file contains a simulation of the cart and pole dynamic system and a procedure for learning to balance the pole that uses multilayer connectionist networks. Both are described in Anderson, "Strategy Learning with Multilayer Connectionist Representations," GTE Laboratories TR87-509.3, 1988. This is a corrected version of the report published in the Proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on Machine Learning, Irvine, CA, 1987.
