MIT OCW - 2.972 How a Hydrofoil Works

https://web.mit.edu/2.972/www/reports/hydrofoil/hydrofoil.html

Saved by uncleflo on February 12th, 2022.

The rquirement is to lift the boat's hull outside the water. Hydrofoil (It is a foil or wing under water used to lift the boat's hull until it is totally outside the water.) Explanation: 1. At low speeds the hull (body of ship) sits in the water and the hydrofoils are totally submerged in the water. 2. As the boat's speed increases, the hydrofoils create lift. 3. At a certain speed, the lift produced by the hydrofoils equals the sum of of the boat and cargo weights. Therefore the hull comes out of the water. 4. Instead of having an increase in drag with increasing speed because the hull is lifted out of the water (contrary to what happens in traditional boats due to pressure drag), the hydrofoils provide a more efficient way of cruising. Decreasing the drag contributes to the better use of the power needed for the movement of the boat.

Surfboard Hull Design

http://www.minisimmonssurfboards.com/surfboard-hull-design/

Saved by uncleflo on September 14th, 2018.

I have been wondering about this a lot in Mini Simmons surfboard design (surfboard design in general)—what is a hull and how does it influence the board and the ride? Two factors are at work when a planing surfboard is in motion: the propulsion power, or force, that creates forward motion (the wave energy); the resistance that opposes it (your fat ass standing on the board). When at rest, a surfers weight is borne entirely by the buoyant force (also depending on how much beer you drank the night before). At low speeds every hull acts as a displacement hull, meaning that the buoyant force is mainly responsible for supporting the surfer. As speed increases, hydrodynamic lift increases as well. Ok, you got to reach back to some physics for this one.

Functions are objects in JavaScript, as you should know by now, if you have read any of the prerequisite articles. And as objects, functions have methods, including the powerful Apply, Call, and Bind methods. On the one hand, Apply and Call are nearly identical and are frequently used in JavaScript for borrowing methods and for setting the this value explicitly. We also use Apply for variable-arity functions; you will learn more about this in a bit.

AngularJS — Superheroic JavaScript MVW Framework

https://angularjs.org/

Saved by uncleflo on May 30th, 2014.

HTML is great for declaring static documents, but it falters when we try to use it for declaring dynamic views in web-applications. AngularJS lets you extend HTML vocabulary for your application. The resulting environment is extraordinarily expressive, readable, and quick to develop. Other frameworks deal with HTML’s shortcomings by either abstracting away HTML, CSS, and/or JavaScript or by providing an imperative way for manipulating the DOM. Neither of these address the root problem that HTML was not designed for dynamic views. AngularJS is a toolset for building the framework most suited to your application development. It is fully extensible and works well with other libraries. Every feature can be modified or replaced to suit your unique development workflow and feature needs. Read on to find out how.

Saved by uncleflo on May 29th, 2014.

Raphaël is a small JavaScript library that should simplify your work with vector graphics on the web. If you want to create your own specific chart or image crop and rotate widget, for example, you can achieve it simply and easily with this library. Raphaël ['ræfeɪəl] uses the SVG W3C Recommendation and VML as a base for creating graphics. This means every graphical object you create is also a DOM object, so you can attach JavaScript event handlers or modify them later. Raphaël’s goal is to provide an adapter that will make drawing vector art compatible cross-browser and easy. Raphaël currently supports Firefox 3.0+, Safari 3.0+, Chrome 5.0+, Opera 9.5+ and Internet Explorer 6.0+.

Udev: Introduction to Device Management In Modern Linux System | Linux.com

http://www.linux.com/news/hardware/peripherals/180950-udev

Saved by uncleflo on August 31st, 2013.

Udev supplies a dynamic device directory containing only the nodes for devices which are connected to the system. It creates or removes the device node files in the /dev directory as they are plugged in or taken out. Dbus is like a system bus which is used for inter-process communication. The HAL gets information from the Udev service, when a device is attached to the system and it creates an XML representation of that device. It then notifies the corresponding desktop application like Nautilus through the Dbus and Nautilus will open the mounted device’s files.

openSUSE 12.3: Chapter 12. Dynamic Kernel Device Management with udev

http://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/html/openSUSE/opensuse-reference/cha.udev.html

Saved by uncleflo on August 31st, 2013.

The kernel can add or remove almost any device in a running system. Changes in the device state (whether a device is plugged in or removed) need to be propagated to userspace. Devices need to be configured as soon as they are plugged in and recognized. Users of a certain device need to be informed about any changes in this device's recognized state. udev provides the needed infrastructure to dynamically maintain the device node files and symbolic links in the /dev directory. udev rules provide a way to plug external tools into the kernel device event processing. This enables you to customize udev device handling by, for example, adding certain scripts to execute as part of kernel device handling, or request and import additional data to evaluate during device handling.

Stirling engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_engine

Saved by uncleflo on July 12th, 2013.

A Stirling engine is a heat engine operating by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas, the working fluid, at different temperature levels such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work.[1][2] Or more specifically, a closed-cycle regenerative heat engine with a permanently gaseous working fluid, where closed-cycle is defined as a thermodynamic system in which the working fluid is permanently contained within the system, and regenerative describes the use of a specific type of internal heat exchanger and thermal store, known as the regenerator. It is the inclusion of a regenerator that differentiates the Stirling engine from other closed cycle hot air engines.

Should scientists avoid publishing shark migration data because it helps fishermen? Spoiler: No « Southern Fried Science

http://www.southernfriedscience.com/?p=15052

Saved by uncleflo on July 12th, 2013.

In recent weeks, some conservation activists have been promoting an idea that I would like to respond to as a member of the scientific community. They claim that scientists shouldn’t publish data about shark migrations, movement, or population dynamics because such data helps fishermen to find areas where there are lots of sharks and kill them. This misguided anti-science paranoia demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding about how conservation policy works.

Space-Eight Robotics

http://www.space-eight.com/walker.html

Saved by uncleflo on May 19th, 2012.

A "passive walker" is a simple mechanical oscillator than can be made to walk down a slight incline using only gravity for power. This passive walker is a test design for a future "passive-dynamic" robotic walker, one that will use small motors to replace the generating force of gravity, allowing it to travel continuously on a flat surface.

Passive Walker

The last several years have seen a growing interest in passive walkers. For robotics, a passive walker serves as a basis on which to build an efficient robotic biped walker. It is estimated that a "passive-dynamic" robotic walker could use as little as 10% of the power required for more traditional humanoid bipeds like the Honda Asimo.
