Change from October could lead to higher prices for those paying with UK-issued cards Mastercard is to increase the fees EU firms face to take payments from online shoppers from the UK by at least 400%, in a move that could mean higher prices for consumers. When a credit or debit card is used, a percentage of the purchase price is paid by the retailer to the bank that issued it as an interchange fee, which is set by a payments firm. Mastercard’s interchange fee is currently 0.3% on credit card payments and 0.2% on debit card payments but it has told EU firms that these will increase to 1.5% and 1.15% respectively from 15 October. The Financial Times, which first reported the change, said the rise would benefit banks and card providers, rather than Mastercard.

Hope this post is useful for people out here on this forum. As a small business owner and find GS1/UCC a complete rip off by charging $750 + annual fees for upc codes! I would rather save those $$$ and use it more effectively in marketing and advertising my products. I found another alternative to buy upc codes for cheap - just google the term 'upc code' or 'ean code' and you should see a list of so many different sites trying to sell upc codes from $4.99 to $120 - some with and most without any annual or set-up/registration fees.

On the BBC’s Weekly Politics programme on 9 December 2010 the historian David Starkey commented on the tuition fees protests in London that day that the capital had seen nothing like it since the Chartist period of the 1840s. Starkey is a historian of the 16th not the 19th century so he is hardly best placed to make an informed comment. However, the broader point was well made. While the fevered imagination of right wing journalists seeking easy headlines may not be the best historical benchmark, for much of the time since the mid-18th century—when the London “mob” makes its first real historical appearance—it has been a factor in shaping what took place.
