Putting Raspberry Pi boards into space is nothing new, but the method of achieving orbit often differs. While the Astro Pi computers headed for the final frontier onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, there are some decidedly lower-tech approaches including, as detailed on the Tindie blog, this $45 RP2040 flight computer from Finnish designer Dan Invents. Combining the RP2040 controller with an altimeter, accelerometer, temperature sensor, and enough juice to power two servo motors (for parachute deployment on the way down), the Rockit (rocket operation computing kit) weighs just 0.18oz (5g) and measures 1.73 x 0.9 x 0.35 inches (44 x 22 x 9 mm). It comes with an open-source firmware pre-installed, and can be tinkered with and updated over micro USB. There's a 16-position rotary switch for adjusting parameters such as start and end positions for the servos, and also a buzzer, so you can more easily find your rocket after a successful landing. Compared to the 2MHz Apollo guidance computer that deposited Neil Armstrong on the Moon, the RP2040 is a powerhouse, and should be more than capable of altitude-based parachute opening and logging flight data from the sensors to a micro SD card. The kit, which costs $44.99, comes with just the board and its pin headers - you need to supply your own battery, servos, cabling, micro SD card and space suit.

When a credit or debit card is used, a percentage of the purchase price is paid by the retailer to the bank that issued it as an interchange fee, which is set by a payments firm. Mastercard’s interchange fee is currently 0.3% on credit card payments and 0.2% on debit card payments but it has told EU firms that these will increase to 1.5% and 1.15% respectively from 15 October. The Financial Times, which first reported the change, said the rise would benefit banks and card providers, rather than Mastercard.

NatWest is to convert all of its debit cards to Mastercard, giving the card scheme a massive leg-up in its efforts to break the UK dominance of rival Visa. While this conversion may "give the card scheme a massive leg-up in its efforts to break the UK dominance of rival Visa", it does little to improve competion or result in lower card acceptance costs for merchants. While the interchange fee regulation caps fees at 0.2% for debit cards, the Mastercard card scheme fees are significantly higher than those of Visa so will result in much higher costs for merchants - and ultimately consumers. This is not good news. Also, as the interchange fees are capped, there is little incentive for card issuers to switch brands as their income remains the same - unless a 'behind the scene' deal has been done to sweeten the deal - which would (in effect) be contrary to the anti-circumvention clause of the IFR.

After flashing the image to the SD card, the drive has been ejected. Disconnect and connect the SD card so it gets detected by macOS again. A boot drive should appear.
