Ever asked yourself "Where can't I fly my drone in the UK?" or "What does a Flight Restriction Zone mean?" NoFlyDrones.co.uk can help. Your free, easy to use tool showing no fly zones in the UK. We use the rules and regulations of the UK Air Navigation Order (CAP393) to present a simple graphical tool to aid safe flight planning for hobbyists and professional drone operators alike. Danger Areas are areas of military airspace often used for activities such as fighter pilot training, live ammunition training or weapons and systems testing (including GPS jamming exercises). The official definition is “An airspace of defined dimensions within which activities dangerous to the flight of aircraft may exist at specified time”. HIRTA’s are High Intensity Radio Transmission Areas and flying through these areas could interfere with the electronics on board your drone. Prohibited Areas are areas of airspace which for one reason or another have been prohibited from having aircraft enter them. The official definition is “An airspace of defined dimensions above the land areas or territorial waters of a State within which the flight of aircraft is prohibited” You will have to investigate the NATS AIP for more information about why the area is prohibited.

A friendly but professional, family run business with an old fashioned approach to sales & customer service, situated on the waterfront of the delightful market town and boating centre of Woodbridge in Suffolk. Andy arrived in Woodbridge from the Midlands in the early 70’s to join his parents who had moved there some years before. Boating had always been the family hobby and he soon realised that whilst you could order your yacht from one of the local yards, there was nowhere to buy a dinghy to hang on the davits! He soon set about "plugging the gap" and acquired a premises on the Quayside and began buying and selling tenders, small fishing boats, sailing dinghies & day boats. His intention was to bring boating to "everyman" and his early adverts boasted that he could "get you sailing or motoring down the river for less than £500". Several thousand boat sales later it seems he was right! The business went from strength to strength and the range and size of boats he offered grew dramatically and now he has over 70 boats on display at any time, from dinghies to ocean going yachts – canoes to 40’ cruisers.

I have a project that uses an ESC to run a brushless motor (Hobbyist RC plane sized, 24 gram, 1300-1500 KV). I would like to experiment with eliminating the ESC and driving the motor with my own circuitry and control software. Are there any good tutorials or other starting points?

This electronic speed control (ESC) for brushed motors combines the features of two of my earlier designs. One was a high-rate 30A ESC with a brake, and the other a high-rate 12A ESC with a BEC (receiver battery eliminator circuit). This ESC is an analog one, using off-the-shelf components. There are no microprocessors (which would require specialized equipment to program), and no surface-mount parts. It’s not as small or as light as many commercially available ESCs, but it’s smaller than many other do-it-yourself designs. It’s also versatile, in that it can be built for many applications, ranging from small Speed 400 sport planes to "hot liner" sailplanes.

Many people dismiss lock picking as simply crime-related, when really, lock picking is a skill like any other and used every day for legitimate purposes. Locksmiths, for example, make use of lock picking in their work; often, it might be easier for them to spend 5 minutes picking a lock than having to drill it out. It would certainly be a lot cheaper for the customer that way. Other than locksmiths, many thousands of people around the world practice lock picking as a challenging hobby and a sport (known as Locksport). It requires real skill, patience and dedication, and many people rise to the challenge. The exhilaration of finally being able to open a particular type of lock after spending days, if not weeks, trying, is a huge reward in itself.

So far, I have been talking about servos largely from the perspective of their typical use. While I hope I have provided a decent foundation about their intended use and some idea of what is inside a servo, these are things you could learn from hobby stores and taking apart a few servos. Today, I want to move on to a discussion of the electrical characteristics of servos, with the control interface as the primary topic. From the servo manufacturers’ perspective, the control signal can be an internal detail, so discussing it means we are moving on to a realm that is less officially documented. I will try to keep things general and back up my claims a bit where practical, but some details might not apply to all servos.

The Pololu USB 16-servo controller is the most full-featured member of our first-generation line of R/C hobby servo controllers. The compact module measures just 1.9"x1.0" including the USB connector, making it smaller than most 8-channel controllers, and it offers both USB and asynchronous serial (UART) connectivity. No features are compromised for the small size, as our USB controller supports independent speed and range settings for each servo while delivering 0.5-microsecond resolution for smooth output across its broad output pulse range of 250 through 2750 microseconds.
