UnCommon Core: The Causes and Consequences of the Ukraine Crisis. John J. Mearsheimer, the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor in Political Science and Co-director of the Program on International Security Policy at the University of Chicago, assesses the causes of the present Ukraine crisis, the best way to end it, and its consequences for all of the main actors. A key assumption is that in order to come up with the optimum plan for ending the crisis, it is essential to know what caused the crisis. Regarding the all-important question of causes, the key issue is whether Russia or the West bears primary responsibility. Since its founding in 1890, the University of Chicago has been a destination for rigorous inquiry and field-defining research. This transformative academic experience empowers students and scholars to challenge conventional thinking in pursuit of original ideas.

The 2015 General Election has shown once and for all that our voting system is broken beyond repair. Please sign our petition calling for a fairer, more proportional system to elect MPs. Our voting system was designed for an era when almost everyone voted for the two big parties. But people have changed: they support a wider range of parties than ever before. It’s time the system caught up with how we actually vote.

If a government proposes to abandon one of the fundamental principles of justice, there had better be a powerful reason. Equality before the law is not ditched lightly. Surely? Well, read this and judge for yourself. The UK government, like that of the US and 13 other EU members, wants to set up a separate judicial system, exclusively for the use of corporations. While the rest of us must take our chances in the courts, corporations across the EU and US will be allowed to sue governments before a tribunal of corporate lawyers. They will be able to challenge the laws they don’t like, and seek massive compensation if these are deemed to affect their “future anticipated profits”.

On 29 September 2014, Cecelia Malmström took the stand in the European Parliament to answer questions – a formality en route to the role of European Trade Commissioner. Unbeknownst to her, Martin Selmayr, the chief of staff for incoming European Commissioner President-elect Jean-Claude Juncker, was alleged to have changed her written testimony, in a section in which she wrote about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Selmayr inserted the following line: "…this clearly means that no investor-State dispute settlement mechanism will be part of that agreement."

Molten salt reactor schematic from GenIVMolten Salt Reactors (MSRs) are nuclear reactors that use a fluid fuel in the form of very hot fluoride or chloride salt instead of the solid fuel used in most reactors. Since the fuel salt is liquid, it can be both the fuel (producing the heat) and the coolant (transporting the heat to the power plant). There are many different types of MSRs, but the most talked about one is definitely the Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor (LFTR). This MSR has Thorium and Uranium dissolved in a fluoride salt and can get planet-scale amounts of energy out of our natural resources of Thorium minerals, much like a fast breeder can get large amounts of energy out of our Uranium minerals. There are also fast breeder fluoride MSRs that don’t use Th at all. And there are chloride salt based fast MSRs that are usually studied as nuclear waste-burners due to their extraordinary amount of very fast neutrons.

Edward Snowden, the whistleblower who pulled back the curtain on the United States' internet surveillance programme Prism, has been hailed as a hero by some, and labelled a traitor by others. His leaking of secret documents about the data monitoring machinery of the US secret intelligence agencies has sparked a huge controversy about privacy and liberty, both in the US and around the world. The story is continually evolving, but here are some of the important points and developments about Prism.

Do you know your online rights? Have you received a letter asking you to remove information from a Web site or to stop engaging in an activity? Are you concerned about liability for information that someone else posted to your online forum? If so, this site is for you. Chilling Effects aims to help you understand the protections that the First Amendment and intellectual property laws give to your online activities. We are excited about the new opportunities the Internet offers individuals to express their views, parody politicians, celebrate their favorite movie stars, or criticize businesses. But we've noticed that not everyone feels the same way. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some individuals and corporations are using intellectual property and other laws to silence other online users. Chilling Effects encourages respect for intellectual property law, while frowning on its misuse to "chill" legitimate activity.
