Lens Tests: A Simple Method

This is a simplified subjective method of testing lenses optical sharpness. This should not be confused with tests for focus accuracy and discrimination in a 3D environment, that is a totally different issue although often confused by the inexperienced. A focus accuracy test is suggested here Focus Test. The advantage over this method, compared to just taking a shot of a garden etc, is elimination of variables such as subject and camera movement, insufficient depth of field, flatness of field and variations in focus location. It uses a nice consistent high contrast subject to make comparisons easy; checking sharpness on general photographic views is not very easy. As the method is subjective, it is worth testing against a known good lens for comparison.

ISO 12233 Test Chart

In 2000, the International Standards Organization adopted ISO Standard 12233: Photography -- Electronic still-picture cameras - Resolution measurements for the measurement of camera resolution. This standard is protected by copyright, but the design of the associated test chart seems not to be protected; its description has been available on the Web in an Excel spreadsheet. I have semi-manually converted this to an Adobe Illustrator file which is displayed here. In 2014 and again in 2017, the ISO revised the standard and the chart below was replaced by several new ones. Those new charts are not available here. In principle, you should be able to print this chart and perform resolution tests on your camera. The reality isn't that simple; there are lots of subtleties having to do with focus distance, quality and contrast of your printer, evenness of illumination, surface reflections, etc.

SK-EBH60 is a portable turntable that provides an ideal solution for creating time lapse videos or panoramic stills with GoPro/action cameras, smart phone and cameras up to 2KG. It includes a 1/4-20 cameras screw on the top and a 3/8 to 1/4-20 socket at the bottom for a tripod, and it can also be used directly on a tabletop or other flat surface. Based on a simple timer mechanism that needs no batteries, the SK-EBH60 is capable of panning 360°counterclockwise in 60 minutes. For clockwise panning you can hang the unit upside down, although this is only recommended for GoPro/action camera, smart phone or cameras weighing less than 1LB. The minimal interface allows the tripod head to be set and used quickly, as well ampletes a 360° cycle in 60-minutes. Stack two heads for double the speed.
