A new map shows where people have the lowest impact—but are those the best places to protect? A newly created map reveals the “wildest” places on Earth—places where humans have the lowest impact. The findings could be used to support the push to set aside half of Earth for nature, its authors say. “If you want to know where in the world you can find a place that has not yet been transformed by agriculture, infrastructure, or settlements, [this map] is where to find it,” says Erle Ellis, a global ecologist at the University of Maryland Baltimore County who contributed to the analysis. “There is a very strong consensus on where these places are.” The map, published today in the journal Global Change Biology, knits together four independently developed models for determining where humanity leaves its fingerprints, each using different indicators of activity.

The Swede 55 was conceived in 1975 by naval architect Knud Reimers of Denmark. He is best known for his design of square meter class yachts and the Udell International. The Swede 55 was a stock design and to this day remains a very popular boat. The Swede 55 was built by Fiskastra Varb shipyard. Upon request of some of Stockholms KSSS members, Reimers designed the Swede 55 as a cruising ocean racing square meter yacht. The Swede 55’s design has an elevated freeboard, a comfortable center-cockpit, a nominal sail area of 55 square meters and additional volume below deck. She was inspired by Rolly Taskers “Siska”, a Knud Reimers 40 square meter boat modified for the Sydney-Hobart Race. The Swede 55 is a nimble, fast and exceptional performing sailing yacht; capable of handling rough seas and keeping her crew safe and comfortable. The boat was built to very high standards as an easily managed yacht. Whether cruising, racing or offshore pursuits, the Swede 55 is powered by a modest sail plan, easily managed by a shorthanded crew, yet offers a full cruising interior with practical accommodations. During this owners ownership, numerous upgrades have been made to her sail inventory, canvas, electronics, wiring, and overall appearance.

At work, we run a simple high-availability (HA) MariaDB setup that consists of an active master that handles all read and write queries from our applications, a passive master that can take over for the active master at any time, and a read-only replication slave (not shown) that we use for backups and analytics. Replication is configured so that the active master follows the passive master, the passive master follows the active master, and the analytics slave follows one of the masters. For the remainders of this post, I will refer to the active master as the master and the passive master as the standby. The benefits of this master-master configuration is that it allows us not only to failover from master to standby if the master becomes unhealthy, but also allows us to perform patching, reboots, lengthy migrations, and other kinds of database maintenance without impacting our users. Well, almost...

This article provides a simple positive model for preventing XSS using output escaping/encoding properly. While there are a huge number of XSS attack vectors, following a few simple rules can completely defend against this serious attack. This article does not explore the technical or business impact of XSS. Suffice it to say that it can lead to an attacker gaining the ability to do anything a victim can do through their browser. Both reflected and stored XSS can be addressed by performing the appropriate validation and escaping on the server-side. DOM Based XSS can be addressed with a special subset of rules described in the DOM based XSS Prevention Cheat Sheet. For a cheatsheet on the attack vectors related to XSS, please refer to the XSS Filter Evasion Cheat Sheet. More background on browser security and the various browsers can be found in the Browser Security Handbook.

International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks, Hindawi Publishing Corporation. International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks focuses on applied research and applications of sensor networks. A large number of important applications depend on sensor networks interfacing with the real world. These applications include medical, military, manufacturing, transportation, safety and environmental planning systems. Many have been difficult to realize because of problems involved with inputting data from sensors directly in to automated systems. Sensor fusion in the context of distributed sensor networks has emerged as the method of choice for resolving these problems.
