No amount of equipment can compensate for lack of knowledge, skill, experience and judgment. Nevertheless, without the right equipment, you will not be safe and your ability to learn will be compromised as well. Here is a list of the items you will need to take part in any one of our Cave or Technical Diver courses. Certain specialty programs may require additional equipment (such as an expedition-grade DPV for the DPV course). You will not, however, need stage bottles for entry-level Cave Diver training, nor will you need a deco bottle if only taking the Apprentice Cave Diver course. Some of these items you may already own. Others you may need to purchase. If you will be flying to Florida to take your course, you should plan on renting heavier items, such as tanks, here. Overall, it is best to own as much of your equipment as possible.

Are you a serious adventure seeker wishing to explore overhead environments? Sign up for the TDI Full Cave Diver Course! This course is the third stage of overhead environment training in the series of TDI’s Full Cave Diver Development Program. Advanced cave dive planning, practical execution of different types of cave systems and scenarios divers encounter are presented. This cave diving course is not intended to prepare divers for evaluating all facets of cave diving. The objective of this course is to expand and critique previous skills accomplished in the TDI Cavern and Introductory Cave Diving programs. Emphasis is placed upon dive planning and skill perfection through actual cave penetration. The TDI Full Cave Diver Course takes an in-depth look at all of the following and more. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may engage in cave diving activities without direct supervision so long as the following limits are adhered to:

Eddy himself is a fanatical technical and cave diver, with a passion for (underwater) photography. To combine his hobbies in an ideal way, he began years ago with the manufacture of specialized equipment for the technical dive team he takes part in. He produced products like stainless steel springstraps, electrical dry suite heating, special HID dive lights and strobe arm systems for cameras. These products and services were also very popular outside his own team. This resulted in the creation of his own company: Scuba Support. A professional workshop at his home makes it possible to both develop and construct the products entirely. This also makes it possible to immediately repair at the workshop, in contrast to regular dealers who must submit materials for repair. With a fine electronic and mechanical training and years of experience in a company that specializes in medical and laboratory equipment it is safe to say that Eddy van Vliet has a technical background. Since O2 cleaning and servicing of equipment is highly specialized work, more and more dive centers find their way to Scuba Support. Also, he´s regularly consulted by diving centers when it comes to equipment maintenance, filling and gas blend systems. As a certified service technician and NAUI instructor, specializing in the Gas Blending Equipment and Service training, Eddy is very equipped to give practical instruction. He is also one of the editors of the website DuikenInBeeld.tv . On this website, he publishes articles and equipment tests.

Plastimo's high resistance flexible water tanks are a reliable, practical and low cost solution to the storage of fresh water on board. As the water tanks are flexible, light and form-fitting, they can be fitted in awkward, difficult to access areas that it would not normally be possible to fit a standard rigid water tank. The tanks consist of a welded non-porous tasteless PVC water chamber that is located inside a tough nylon envelope for complete watertightness and resistance to tearing and abrasion. This double envelope design makes maintenance easy, as the inner chamber can be easily removed from the outer protective envelope for routine cleaning and examination. The water tanks are supplied complete, ready to install, with a 38mm diameter inlet fitting and 12mm diameter outlet.

Surveying in caves is a hard and thankless task. We spend hours in uncomfortable locations working to obtain the data we bring back to create cave maps. However in several cases all the hard work put into the survey and sketching of caves has been lost. Either the data itself is lost due to a catastrophe or negligence or the project leader loses interest in the cave, project, or in several cases, caving altogether, and walks away with data. I started caving and mapping in Rockcastle and Jackson Counties Kentucky. Over time I saw many great mapping efforts disappear as people went on to other things, and the maps and data were not preserved. This site was started as an example how the internet can preserve and make available data over long periods of time. It started with Rockcastle and Jackson maps that I had worked on, then friends maps, and now is trying to capture the entire wealth of cave maps in these counties as well as surrounding counties.

The CDG believes that their cave diving procedures, developed by continuous improvement over 70 years, represent the best way to produce a well trained, intelligent and alert diver. Solo cave diving in the UK can trace its roots back to early dives by Graham Balcombe and Jack Sheppard in Swildon’s Hole in 1934. The procedures developed in the 30’s were formalised by the founding of the Cave Diving Group in 1946. A constant theme throughout the existence of the CDG has been to adapt materials and methods to the job in hand and to be open to continuous improvement. Cave diving has become extremely popular throughout the world. Florida is one of the regions blessed with many cave diving sites of outstanding quality and easy access. Consequently, there has been an explosion of popularity in cave diving in the USA. It is estimated that there are as many as 20,000 cave and cavern divers in Florida alone. These divers are organised into a number of national bodies including the National Speleological Society, Cave Diving Section and the National Association for Cave Diving. The generally agreed advice from this wealth of experience is that cave diving in the USA should be conducted by teams of divers in a buddy system and that solo cave diving introduces an unnecessary level of risk. Despite this advice the Cave Diving Group continues to recommend solo cave diving as the safer alternative for UK sump conditions. Why is that?

Cave diving is a true thrillseeker’s pastime regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous extreme sports, as you venture into the unknown – especially when passing through a sump where the tunnel is completely submerged in water. As a cave diver it is essential to protect your own safety. Plenty of lighting for good visibility, breathing apparatus to keep you supplied with oxygen, and a guide line that you can follow to find your exit are essential. Remember that underwater cave system sumps can be hundreds of feet long and may be blocked or open out into caverns where there is no oxygen, so the correct breathing equipment for technical diving is a must. We strongly advise being a part of the Cave Diving Group and undertaking extensive cave diving courses before you are ready to venture into new locations yourself. For those qualified, here are ten of the best cave diving locations in the UK:

Alan Glennon, Ph.D. Student at UCSB Geography, gives a three-minute "lightning" talk on cave mapping. The presentation was part of the spatial@ucsb lightning talks session held on 1 March 2010 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Participants were invited to speak about any geographic subject for exactly three minutes using ten slides.

Converting cave survey notes into a finished map With a set of cave survey sketch notes in hand, the next steps for converting those notes into a beautiful and accurate map can be daunting. Some cave cartographers spend more time in front of a computer screen than they do underground. Historically survey data was compiled with a calculator, and maps were drafted on mylar sheets with pencil and rapidiograph. Virtually everyone today is using cave survey data management and digital drafting software for the improved efficiency, quality, and ability to make changes and updates. In most cases the data management and drafting are handled by different applications. I recommend developing an efficient workflow for handling new survey data.

Cave certification is a process, with progressive steps to gradually increase your skills. Our end goal is that you are confident to independently cave dive without a guide. Accomplishing this requires much more work than simply training someone to follow a guide, and you will notice that our courses are longer and more rigorous than most. While the initial investment to reach this level is high, cave diving with a buddy is inexpensive once you are certified – and we have an alumni network to help you find buddies! We also offer unique opportunites for our former students at low or no cost, such as science and mapping projects.

Early in 2011 I realized that open source micro controllers had the potential to replace expensive commercial sensor units with cheap & cheerful DIY equivalents. So this blog is a record of my attempt to build an underwater flow sensor using an Arduino based data logger. I think it’s fantastic that we now live in a world where anyone can learn enough from the open source community to create something like this from scratch.
