In this participatory session, you will learn how to tell when someone is lying. Really. As a former CIA Officer with more than 20 years of experience in interviewing, interrogation and polygraph examination, Susan has seen her share of truth avoiders. She has, in fact, developed behavioral screening programs that are used by the federal government. Don’t miss out on learning her methodologies in spotting deception. Susan Carnicero, Author of Spy the Lie and founding partner, Qverity

When sailors are talking about their boats they often refer to ratios and numbers. That´s a tendency in human behaviour to try to generalize things to make them comparable. Of course, everybody knows that you cannot really describe apple to pears and so it´s worthless to describe a let´s say Seventies IOR-era King´s Cruiser 33 like mine to a modern day cruising yacht but we nevertheless tend to do so. The Displacement-Length-Ratio in general is a non-dimensional number. It sets into relation the displacement of a boat (expressed in pounds) to the length of her waterline (in feet). So, in general, this ratio is looking for the relation between the (heavy?) volume of water being pushed aside by a boat´s hull and the length (and therefore speed potential see for my article Hull speed vs. Froude number here) of her hull. Sounds fair enough?

The heterogeneity in a composite material is introduced due to not only its bi-phase or in some cases multi-phase composition, but also laminations. This leads to a distinctly different stress strain behaviour in the case of laminates. The anisotropy caused due to fibre orientations and the resulting extension-shear and bending-twisting coupling as well as the extension-bending coupling developed due to unsymmetric lamination add to the complexities. A clear understanding of the constitutive equations of a composite laminate is thus desirable before these are used in analysis and design of composite structures. In this chapter, we first introduce to the readers the basic constitutive equations for a general three-dimensional anisotropic material with and without material symmetry, elastic constants and compliances and their relations to engineering constants, as well as transformation laws for elastic constants and compliances for both three and two-dimensional cases.

NNetpol poster for the Don't Be on a Database campaignetpol have launched a campaign to limit the gathering of data by the police on political protest. The campaign, DON’T FEED THE FEDS – DON’T BE ON A DATABASE, encourages protesters to assert their legal rights to keep their personal details private. The campaign includes a series of posters and flyers with the words, ‘Your name and address is none of their business’.

On the fileserver I run, I use samba to conveniently access my files. I like Samba. I can mount it on any machine I run and access my files like it’s any other filesystem, but when it comes to sharing files to other (anonymous) users, Samba has to cope with some ugly Windows legacy. After all, Samba is just an open source implementation of SMB/CIFS which Windows calls “Windows File Sharing”. Let’s look at the differences and how to cope with them.

Honda engineers created ASIMO with 34 Degrees of Freedom that help it walk and perform tasks much like a human. One Degree of Freedom is the ability to move right and left or up and down. These degrees of freedom act much like human joints for optimum movement and flexibility. Lightweight materials, like a magnesium alloy structure, combined with powerful computers and 34 servo motors throughout its body help ASIMO move smoothly with ease.

Over and over I have been hearing more and more complaints about the people’s behaviour when dancing salsa in nightclubs and bars in Luxembourg and other countries too….. so much so, that some people have actually given up dancing because of this! This is a big shame and needs to be stopped. I’ve done a bit of research and put together a list of points which I think EVERYONE should consider. Please remember dancefloor manners are important for ALL LEVELS of dancers! Salsa is supposed to be fun and some people tend to forget this in the rush to prove themselves as a ‘good dancer’. We are all a bit guilty of some of the problems mentioned below, so let's all try to pay a bit of attention to the way we dance and then everyone can enjoy salsa! Thanks!
