When sailors are talking about their boats they often refer to ratios and numbers. That´s a tendency in human behaviour to try to generalize things to make them comparable. Of course, everybody knows that you cannot really describe apple to pears and so it´s worthless to describe a let´s say Seventies IOR-era King´s Cruiser 33 like mine to a modern day cruising yacht but we nevertheless tend to do so. The Displacement-Length-Ratio in general is a non-dimensional number. It sets into relation the displacement of a boat (expressed in pounds) to the length of her waterline (in feet). So, in general, this ratio is looking for the relation between the (heavy?) volume of water being pushed aside by a boat´s hull and the length (and therefore speed potential see for my article Hull speed vs. Froude number here) of her hull. Sounds fair enough?

ZFS, short form of Zettabyte Filesystem is an advanced and highly scalable filesystem. It was originally developed by Sun Microsystems and is now part of the OpenZFS project. With so many filesystems available on Linux, it is quite natural to ask what is special about ZFS. Unlike other filesystem, it is not just a filesystem but a logical volume manager as well. Some of the features of ZFS that make it popular are: Data Integrity - data consistency and integrity are ensured through copy-on-write and checksum techniques; Pooling of storage space - available storage drives can be put together into a single pool called zpool; Software RAID - Setting up a raidz array is as simple as issuing a single command; Inbuilt volume manager - ZFS acts as a volume manager as well; Snaphots, clones, compression - these are some of the advanced features that ZFS provides.

The 2013 Components for Unmanned Vehicles – Marketing Guide and Directory is a companion volume to a recently published "UAV Marketing Directory" which was devoted to aerial systems. In addition, this report includes not only aerial but also ground, maritime, submarine, and satellite unmanned systems. Over 1,000 companies, organizations such as educational, research, development and testing and economic development organizations are included covering 100 different categories. An index is provided which places companies in various categories. The majority of companies included are component, materials, and subsystems equipment suppliers but also includes companies providing services, consulting, training, publishing, and other infrastructure suppliers. It is essentially a complete source of information on unmanned systems.

This morning when I got up I had no intention of writing a guide to making a bootable NTFS USB Drive. As things often happen on a review site you often find yourself waking up intending to get one thing done and end up going in a totally different direction. Today was one of those days. I’ve been dealing with SSD, Platter hard drives and USB Drives all week. Suddenly this morning I found myself thinking wouldn’t it be nice to be able to boot to a USB disk with the NTFS file system and run diagnostics, memory tests, and maybe install Vista or XP from a USB disk. How about being able to not only install Vista from a USB disk but once Vista is installed have all the review benchmarks and files I needed consolidated on one flash drive instead of searching for a bunch of disks scattered around my review area.

In Disk Management, one of the following volume status descriptions will always appear in the graphical view of the volume and in the Status column of the volume in list view. The Failed status occurs when a basic or dynamic volume cannot be started automatically, the disk is damaged, or the file system is corrupt. This status also occurs after importing a volume with Data Incomplete status. An error icon appears on the failed volume. Unless the disk or file system can be repaired, the Failed status indicates data loss. If the volume is a basic volume, make sure that the underlying physical disk is turned on, plugged in, and attached to the computer. No other user action is possible for basic volumes. If the volume is a dynamic volume, make sure the underlying dynamic disks are online. If the disks are not online, you should reactivate them. If this succeeds, the volume automatically restarts and returns to the Healthy status. For instructions describing how to bring a disk online,

RAID 5 consists of three or more volumes each located on a separate physical disk. As with RAID 0, RAID 5 also uses disk striping, whereby blocks of data are divided up into stripes with each stripe written to a different disk. RAID 5, however, differs quite considerably from RAID 0. Under RAID 5, not only are the data stripes written, but also parity information relating to the data. The key to RAID 5 fault tolerance is the fact that the parity information for a particular data stripe is always written to a different drive from the drive containing the corresponding data stripe. This means that if a disk fails, the corresponding parity information stored on another disk can be used for error detection and data correction (also referred to as regeneration).
