Photographer Max Siedentopf has a new project that examines one of the most boring types of photography: the passport photo. The series shows that even though passport photos need to be boring, the photo shoots themselves don’t.
Official passport photo requirements are extremely restrictive and specify the exact framing (centered with the subject facing straight on), lighting (a clear background with no shadow), and facial expression (no smiling). “It seems almost impossible for any kind of self-expression,” Siedentopf says. His project, titled Passport Photos, “tries to challenge these official rules by testing all the things you could be doing while you are taking your official document photo.”

In this era where less and less is made in the United States and corporations decide what choices we will have, it's wonderful that you can still build a boat for yourself that is lighter, faster and more beautiful than anything spit out by a big company. I'm often asked, "Can I build one? I don't have a lot of woodworking experience." I say, "If you thought about building one, you can! Building a boat never even crosses the mind of someone who can't." Desire and tenacity will overcome lack of skill, and you will learn all the skills you need, building this boat. And when you are finished, you will be rightly proud of what you have done. And what you have learned, is that you can do a lot more than you ever imagined. The skills you learn and the power of what you CAN DO, will flow over into other areas of your life.

No problem connecting to NFS with firewalls disabled, but even with TCPView it's not obvious which ports require opening.
We've opened port 2049 for both UDP and TCP and all seems well, but there's a selection of ports mentioned across the web for NFS. So with XenServer just 2049? Sharing filesystems by NFS: Regardless of which choice is made for ID mapping you will need to adjust any firewall the system is using so that NFS clients can communicate with the server. You will need to ensure that the following ports are open before sharing any filesystem: UDP: 111, 1039, 1047, 1048 and 2049. TCP: 111, 1039, 1047, 1048 and 2049. See _this article_ Tobias

When setting up the NAS, you need to enter in a server name. This becomes the hostname. How can I set a FQDN (i.e. NAS-Store.example.com) without it being wiped out all the time? You can just setup a ddns name and use it to get access (I'm guessing you wanna use that name to gain outside access to your NAS). There is a DDNS tab in Control Panel > External Access. Register your name there. I don't need to worry about DDNS. That is not an issue. As I run an internal DNS on my network, I can type in the FQDN of the NAS and get to it OK. That's all fine. I would just like to be able to give the NAS an FQDN and an SSL certificate to match it, so I do not get any warnings that the cert is incorrect for the NAS when I have external clients use the Cloud Station. I don´t you buy a domain name, setup it up by using DynDns client and give the domain name to your clients to connect to, and then set your internal DNS with that same domain name to point to the internal IP, and also set the name of the NAS with that domain name.

If I ask you “Do you remember the article about electrons in NY Times?” there’s a better chance you will remember it than if I asked you “Do you remember the article about electrons in the Physics books?”. Here’s why: an article about electrons in NY Times is far less common than in a collection of physics books. It is less likely to stumble upon the “electron” concept in NY Times than in a physics book. Let’s consider now the scenario of a single article. Suppose you read an article and you’re asked to rank the concepts found in the article by importance. The chances are you’ll basically order the concepts by frequency. The reason is simply that important stuff would be mentioned repeatedly because the narrative gravitates around them. Combining the 2 insights, given a term, a document and a collection of documents we can loosely say that:importance ~ appearances(term, document) / count(documents containing term in collection).

Every once in a while I get on a computer and I need to count the number of lines in a file. My first instinct is to open my text editor (editplus) and hit ctrl+end to get to the bottom of the document. Then I can view the status bar which will tell me the line number. This works fine when I am on my computer but not when I am on another computer that does not have editplus installed. My next option might be to open this file in notepad and do the exact same thing. This will work fine if the file is not to large. The problem is I often deal with very large files. I need a quicker way to produce the same results. This is where DOS comes into play. I can use the following command and let DOS quickly tell me the number of lines in the file.

I’ve had to search the occurrency of a string within some very large text files, as result of a “file carving” made with Autopsy. Usually on Windows I use Notepad ++, that provides a convenient feature of ‘Search in files’, but this great tool has difficulty to open files larger than 2Gb. However there are some other solutions on Windows.

Panama’s indigenous Guna tribe have called San Blas home for hundreds of years. But the entire idyllic archipelago is at risk of being underwater within a matter of decades. Ever since I’d arrived in Panama, I’d been hearing about San Blas, an archipelago of more than 350 islands in the Caribbean Sea. The suggestions to visit came both from Panama locals and a friend back home in New York, who claimed a day spent boating around San Blas was by far the most exciting adventure she had during her travels.

If you haven’t experienced a 360° video yet, you’re in for a blown-mind. I recently watched this 360 degree vlog made by Casey Neistat and had such a good time exploring NYC. Even without a VR headset like the Oculus Rift or Gear VR, 360° video is super fun to watch and explore through a platform like YouTube since you can still move your camera around to see what’s “around” you. I’m convinced that this is the future. Experience it for yourself as soon as possible. Be sure to check out our list of the 10 best VR (Virtual Reality) headsets, too.

Are you interested in visiting our state? In recent years, our little home in the Pacific Northwest has gotten a lot of attention. We’re flattered. People can’t seem to say enough about it. And a lot of the things they’ve been saying are true. We’ve partnered with Roadtrippers to provide a great way to plan a trip around Oregon. Packed with all the great resources you’ll find on TravelOregon.com, the Oregon Roadtrippers experience gets you from Point A to Point B (and C, D, and E), suggests stuff to do on the way, and let’s you take it with you on your smartphone. Not familiar with U.S. geography? Oregon is on the West Coast, right between Washington and California. Some people think it’s the best thing about the West Coast, and of course they’re right. Made up of seven diverse regions, Oregon has the ocean, mountains, valleys, high desert, cities, small towns, and almost everything in between.

A common way to check if a point is in a triangle is to find the vectors connecting the point to each of the triangle's three vertices and sum the angles between those vectors. If the sum of the angles is 2*pi then the point is inside the triangle, otherwise it is not. It works, but it is very slow. This text explains a faster and much easier method.

There are various ray-tri tests around. I'll describe a few of the most interesting ones because I think that there's no "definitive" ray-tri intersection. Much depends on the type of application you're going to develop. Some methods are faster if most of the tests are positive (hit), some if they are not (early rejection). Some use lots of memory to precalculate as much as possible so they are very fast for scenes with no cache-hit problems (for examples in scenes with not so many, big triangles and spatial subdivision), while others use less memory and no precalc. etc... The precalculation option is often important so I'll talk about it more here. There are two kinds of precalculations that could be useful: per-frame precalculation (something that can be precalculated for the entire scene, for every triangle, and that just needs to be updated if the triangles are animated, if it changes their position in the next frame). The other type is per-ray-bundle precalculation.

The intersection of the most basic geometric primitives was presented in the Algorithm 5 about Intersections of Lines and Planes. We will now extend those algorithms to include 3D triangles which are common elements of 3D surface and polyhedron models. We only consider transversal intersections where the two intersecting objects do not lie in the same plane. Ray and triangle intersection computation is perhaps the most frequent nontrivial operation in computer graphics rendering using ray tracing. Because of its importance, there are several published algorithms for this problem (see: [Badouel, 1990], [Moller & Trumbore, 1997], [O'Rourke, 1998], [Moller & Haines, 1999]). We present an improvement of these algorithms for ray (or segment) and triangle intersection. We also give algorithms for triangle-plane and triangle-triangle intersection.

A problem that has plagued web developers for years is how to add real-time information to their applications, such as a progress bar for file uploads. Users are impatient; they don’t want to sit and wait while the browser is doing something and wonder whether it has frozen or if they have a slow connection. Providing a progress indicator gives users useful information and lets them know exactly what’s going on.
