How to Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer | WIRED

https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-make-hand-sanitizer/

Saved by uncleflo on February 13th, 2022.

Properly scrubbing your hands is one of the best ways to stop the spread of germs and viruses and to ensure you don’t get sick. But if you don't have access to soap and clean water, or if you're nowhere near a sink, you should carry hand sanitizer to protect your health. As you're no doubt aware, bottles of hand sanitizer (Purell, Wet Ones, and the like) keep selling out due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. You can check these Amazon and Walmart listings to see if any are in stock, but make sure you're not buying mass-manufactured sanitizer that uses methanol, or wood alcohol, which can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested (check here to see hand sanitizer brands to avoid). Also, don't drink the sanitizer, or any cleaning products, including bleach. It may be hard to find that Purell, but making your own sanitizer is remarkably easy. You just have to be careful you don't mess it up and that the tools you use for mixing are properly sanitized; otherwise you could contaminate the whole thing. Also, the World Health Organization recommends letting your concoction sit for a minimum of 72 hours after you're done. That way the sanitizer has time to kill any bacteria that might have been introduced during the mixing process.

Marianne Dissard

Saved by uncleflo on January 17th, 2022.

Singer and performer, lyricist and author, producer and filmmaker, or, as noted by producer BK-One in his liner notes to her ‘Best Of’ album ’Cibola Gold’, fearless… French-born American chanteuse Marianne Dissard is probably best known for the music she recorded in Tucson over her two decades of life in her Arizona hometown. She has toured her desert noir baroque Sonoran border pop worldwide from China to New Zealand, Europe to North America. A charismatic performer, her critically-acclaimed American chanson plays effortlessly with contradictions: ‘tender, yet abrasive; melodramatic, but vulnerable; comical and heartbreaking’. Equally so her first book, 'Not Me', an impish and poetic memoir and exploration of trauma and the life of a disordered touring musician, praised by some of Dissard's favorite authors; Mitch Cullin ('Tideland'), Chris Rush (‘The Light Years’), and Andrew Smith ('Moondust').

Cube in a cube / Turners cube - YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw3GzqgWg-8

Saved by uncleflo on June 23rd, 2019.

I've made several of these Turners Cubes over the years when I was in the US Air Force, most of the time to teach younger Airmen that you could square a part in a lathe using a 4 jaw chuck. I never used a holding ring nor did I use the hot glue. Each cube was cut from the inside one to the outer one. Sometimes we would heat the cube and freeze a steel ball from a bearing and drop it into the center cube, when everything went back to room temp the steel ball was captured in the smallest cube. This was also a way to teach new guys coming in to a machine shop to think outside of the box to come up with ways to machine parts. You have to understand, that back in the 1970's and in to the late 80's or 90's most of our shops were still using machinery dating back to WWII and we didn't have a lot of tooling like downtown shops or factories had. So we had to come up with ways to use the tooling on hand and make tooling that would work to fix and or make parts for aircraft. It was a real learning experience during those times.

Theta360 Guide Dealing with Heat during Live Stream

The unit below overheated 16 minutes into the shoot. It is using UVC Blender and a USB cable during an indoor shoot at Stanford during a crowded VR event. If the THETA is overheating, point a standard household fan at it. The airflow may be enough to cool the outside of the THETA and help with the internal overheating. People have reported success by sticking $6 Raspberry Pi heatsinks onto the body of the THETA or taping or attaching a small fan used for computer CPUs to the outside of the THETA. 6 piece Addicore heatsink for Raspberry Pi for $5.95; Mudder 8 piece black heatsink cooler for RPi for $6.99; TinkerCad Fan Holder for 3D printing.

Saved by uncleflo on January 20th, 2015.

A few months back, I decided to make a permanent myspace account so that I could easily view pictures of random girls whenever I please without creating a new account each time. I also had a number of friends on there and figured I would see what all the hype was about. Myspace is a site for keeping up with friends, meeting new people, and even getting laid (sorry ladies, I'm taken.) It allows you to set up a profile/web page with a limited ability to make it look and feel how you wanted. Too limiting. I couldn't even fit a good line into my "headline" without taking words out and sounding like G.W.B. trying to respond to an arbitrary question. Hell, I couldn't even fit more than 12 glamour shots on my photos page. Like an illegal alien with a plan, I ventured to evade these limiting borders.

Dark Roasted Blend: Ekranoplans Showcase

They hover and skim above the water at speeds of up to 250 miles an hour, while carrying heavier loads of cargo and troops than any airplane could - the Ekranoplans, or "Wing-in-Ground" (WIG) vehicles are possibly the most exciting and strange-looking transportation technology ever invented by men. Developed mostly by the Soviets during the Cold War (by the Rostislav Alexeev design firm), some ekranoplans were over 500 feet in length and had the estimated weight of over 500 tons! And yet they skimmed over the waves with grace, at high speeds, able to negotiate stormy conditions, and unseen by the radar - all thanks to the aerodynamic principle known as the "ground effect".

LED Cube Matrix Driver

http://picprojects.org.uk/projects/lc/index.htm

Saved by uncleflo on February 8th, 2014.

Do a search on YouTube and you'll turn up literally dozens of video clips of LED cubes, small 3x3x3 cubes, bi-colour, RGB and mono cubes, amazing 16 x 16 x 16 RGB cubes. However, very few show you how to make one and provide the firmware. The cube described on this page uses a 5 x 5 x 5 matrix of single colour LEDs. This is a good size to experiment with as the number of LEDs required at 125 keeps the cost down, doesn't take too long to assemble and just fits onto a eurocard sized PCB. The power requirement is under 1 amp and the use of just one colour keeps both the hardware construction and control software fairly simple.

Cool Solutions: Creating Custom init Scripts

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/15380.html

Saved by uncleflo on September 5th, 2013.

Novell/SUSE Linux uses a system of scripts to determine which services to run on system boot. These scripts exist in /etc/init.d/ (or the symbolic link /etc/rc.d/), and are referred to as 'init scripts.' They help dictate which services are active in each runlevel, and also allow the services to be manually controlled. For more information on runlevels, see this article. Each service that ships with Novell/SUSE Linux installs a script in /etc/init.d/. If a custom service is installed it may not have a init script. This article explains how to create these scripts.

Stirling engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_engine

Saved by uncleflo on July 12th, 2013.

A Stirling engine is a heat engine operating by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas, the working fluid, at different temperature levels such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work.[1][2] Or more specifically, a closed-cycle regenerative heat engine with a permanently gaseous working fluid, where closed-cycle is defined as a thermodynamic system in which the working fluid is permanently contained within the system, and regenerative describes the use of a specific type of internal heat exchanger and thermal store, known as the regenerator. It is the inclusion of a regenerator that differentiates the Stirling engine from other closed cycle hot air engines.

A battle of three descriptors: SURF, FREAK and BRISK

Saved by uncleflo on August 27th, 2012.

I think developers and research guys who works with object recognition, image registration and other areas that uses keypoint extraction can find this post useful. Recently (from 2.4.2) a new feature descriptor algorithm was added to OpenCV library. FREAK descriptor is claimed to be superior to ORB and SURF descriptors, yet it's very fast (comparable to ORB). Also people in comments on my blog mentioned BRISK descriptor which is also new and more efficient than SURF. Well, finally i find a time to compare them and publish my research results.
