[GUIDE] Using LaTeX on the forums

On this course, you will be using a lot of maths. Sometimes, you may need clarification on how to use maths for a particular problem. Luckily, you can use LaTeX on the forums to display maths in a readable format (as opposed to unwieldy formats like 4*10^6 which can be difficult to parse). There are a lot of different commands for LaTeX, but you will only need a few in this course. To start using LaTeX, you first need to type $$ - this is telling the forums software that whatever you type in between the dollar signs is LaTeX and should be displayed as LaTeX

American Institute of Steel Construction, Founded 1921 - There's always a solution in steel

https://www.aisc.org/

Saved by uncleflo on September 2nd, 2014.

When we started working on the project, we used a lot of cutting edge tools, especially in terms of 3-D modeling and the fabrication machinery used to execute this incredibly complex design. But since then, a funny thing has happened. What we thought was cutting edge has become the norm. However, when I tell this to people (even people in the steel industry), they initially look skeptical. They tell me steel is an old, mature, smoke-stack industry. But while steel has been the material of choice for construction for most of the past century, it doesn't mean it's not a modern industry with new technology (ranging from improvements in the properties of steel to better equipment and new communication and design tools). And fortunately, on September 19, you have a chance to see for yourself.

To stimulate and support such investigation as may be deemed necessary and valuable to determine the suitability, strength and behavior of various types of structural connections. To promote the knowledge of economical and efficient practices relating to such structural connections. To prepare and publish related standards and such other documents as necessary to achieving its purpose. The RCSC is a non-profit, volunteer organization, comprised of over 85 leading experts in the fields of structural steel connection design, engineering, fabrication, erection and bolting. Previous, current, and future research projects funded by the RCSC serve to provide safety, reliability, and standard practice for the steel construction industry throughout the world. The RCSC is actively soliciting research contributions to further our efforts to provide meaningful research, clear specifications, and practical application advice for our industry.

Now consider the case of compressive loads and the instability they can cause. Consider only static instabilities (static loading as opposed to dynamic loading [e.g., flutter]) "A system becomes unstable when a negative stiffness overcomes the natural stiffness of the structure." Review some of the mathematical concepts. Limit initial discussions to columns.

Stresses in Beams, David Roylance, MIT

Saved by uncleflo on September 2nd, 2014.

Understanding of the stresses induced in beams by bending loads took many years to develop. Galileo worked on this problem, but the theory as we use it today is usually credited principally to the great mathematician Leonard Euler (1707{1783). As will be developed below, beams develop normal stresses in the lengthwise direction that vary from a maximum in tension at one surface, to zero at the beam's midplane, to a maximum in compression at the opposite surface. Shear stresses are also induced, although these are often negligible in comparision with the normal stresses when the length-to-height ratio of the beam is large.

Saved by uncleflo on September 2nd, 2014.

The treatment of torsion in most Mechanics of Materials textbooks is uneven. While circular cross sections are analyzed in detail (sometimes too thoroughly), the coverage of non-circular sections is typically relegated to “advanced material” covering 4-5 pages. (In this respect Beer-Johnston- DeWolf is somewhat better than Vable, who totally omits Open Thin Wall sections)
