Bye Aerospace’s eFlyer 800 is a clean-sheet design that will carry eight people, including one or two pilots. The 800 will have two motors, powered by a grid of electric cells across the airframe. This is the third model in a lineup of electric planes from the Denver-based aerospace firm, but the first with two motors. The eFlyer 2 is a two-seater for professional flight training that was developed when the company launched in 2014, and the eFlyer 4, a four-seater for air taxi and advanced training, came later. Both models have more than 360 orders each. “The eFlyer 800 is the first all-electric propulsion technology airplane that achieves twin-turboprop performance and safety with no CO2 and extremely low operating costs,” said CEO George E. Bye in a statement. The eight-seat aircraft will be competing against turboprops with much higher operating costs, but will have similar interior space and accommodations. Product Specifications: PSS Type A Seal Dimensions The Type A PSS Shaft Seal is a mechanical face seal. The sealing surface is created between the flat surfaces of the rotating stainless-steel rotor and the stationary carbon flange. The stationary carbon flange is attached to the front side of the bellows with hose clamps, and the back end of the bellows fits over the Stern tube and is secured with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is fitted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange. The stainless-steel rotor compresses the bellows before the rotor is secured to the shaft with set screws. This compression (pre-load) maintains constant contact between the two flat faces of the stainless-steel rotor and carbon flange, allowing the PSS to compensate for the variable fore and aft movement due to propeller thrust. In addition, the carbon flange is over-bored to the shaft diameter allowing it to “float” around the shaft and thus compensate for most misalignment and vibration problems. The stainless-steel rotor is sealed to the shaft by two O-rings recessed into the collar's bore. These O-rings rotate with the shaft and stainless-steel rotor and do not experience wear during operation.

The seriesOne shaft seal was designed for smaller, single-engine vessels with stainless steel propeller shafts. This shaft seal fits shaft diameters from 7/8 through 1 1/4 in 1/8 increments. It can also be used on metric stainless shafting from 25mm through 30mm. The seriesOne shaft seal is covered by a one year warranty. Tides Marine suggests that all twin-engine applications use the Tides SureSeal. The seriesOne housing is produced in the same manner as the SureSeal shaft seals. However, in order to produce a shaft seal for our more cost-conscious customers, the front cap design of the seriesOne has been modified. For vessels powered by smaller diesel engines (1-3 cylinders) using softer engine mounts, the multi-convolution articulating hose is recommended. This extra flexibility compensates for increased lateral engine movement during operation.

When a metal is exposed to underwater or wet environments, marine grade metals may be necessary to prevent the material from failing under the conditions. To be considered a marine grade, the material must be able to resist corrosive effects that are common in a water environment. To achieve this, special alloying elements are added to these grades in order to defend against corrosion. Marine grades can be found in most of the metal types, which include aluminium, stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper and carbon steel. Most carbon steel is not well-suited for marine environments, however, there are several marine grade carbon steels available. AH36, DH36, and EH36 are all examples of commonly used marine grade carbon steels approved by the American Bureau of Shipping. These grades will have slightly more alloying elements such as manganese and chromium compared to their ASTM grade counterparts, which helps achieve higher strength and more corrosion resistance. There are also marine grades of engineering steel as well. Grades MD, ME, MF, MG, and others can provide the strength that normal alloy steel is known for, and have also been approved by the American Bureau of Shipping for use in shipbuilding applications.

The Boatbuilder Connection I would like to know if,when replacing a diesel engine with an electric motor someone need to look for the same HP for the electric motor as the hp the diesel had. probably not the exact same HP, because electric motors have more torque at lower RPMs than an internal cumbustion engine

On a typical sailing boat with shaft drive, does the prop turn at engine rpm? Or is there a reduction? And when the prop freewheels while under sail, what would be a typical rpm? Presumably for a given boat speed (whether sail or power), the prop rpm will be less under sail than the rpm under power for the same boat speed, and presumably this ratio is closely linked to the propeller efficiency. I know on aeroplanes that prop efficiency is around 85% - is this a realistic figure for water-screws?

Rinspeed will present its new sQuba, the worlds first diving car, at the Geneva Motor Show (March 6-16). The car is not only able to drive on roads autonomously with a push of a button (thus without a driver, passenger or further assistance), but can also transform into an amphibious vehicle which can be submerged in water up to 10 meters (33 feet). An electric motor with powerful torque drives the rear wheels, while the propulsion on the water is ensured by two propellers in the stern and two powerful jet drives in the bow propelling the vehicle under water while diving. When underwater, the driver and passenger are enclosed in the vehicle thanks to light weight body components made of futuristic Carbon Nano Tubes and are supplied with fresh breathing air by the self-contained on-board system.
