Imagine you have survived an apocalypse. Civilization as you knew it is no more. What will life be like and how will you cope? In 2006, Dylan Evans set out to answer these questions. He left his job in a high-tech robotics lab, moved to the Scottish Highlands and founded a community called The Utopia Experiment. In this book he tells his own extraordinary story: his frenzied early enthusiasm for this unusual project, the many challenges of post-apocalyptic living, his descent into madness and his gradual recovery. There is a special kind of intelligence for dealing with risk and uncertainty. It doesn’t correlate with IQ and most psychologists fail to spot it because it is found in a disparate group of people such as weather forecasters, professional gamblers and hedge-fund managers. This book shows just how important risk intelligence is.

In a world filled with ever-more-complex technological, sociological, ecological, political & economic systems... a tool to make interactive simulations may not be that much help. But it can certainly try. It's the ancient, time-honored way of learning: messing around and seeing what happens. Play with simulations to ask "what if" questions, and get an intuition for how the system works! Raw code is too inaccessible. Also drag-and-drop is too mainstream. But with LOOPY, you can model systems by simply drawing circles & arrows, like a wee baby

The process to follow when applying to the CAA for an operational authorisation (a permission or an exemption) depends on the relative complexity of the authorisation that you are seeking: Applications for relatively ‘simple’ operational authorisations, which are commonly referred to as a ‘Standard Permission’, are addressed via an online application process: A ‘Standard Permission’ enables a person to conduct commercial operations with a small unmanned aircraft (drone) and also permits operations within a congested area. Applicants will be required to provide all documents and payment online (credit /debit card only ) before submitting their application. Applications for more complex operational authorisations, commonly referred to as ‘Non-Standard Permissions’, or those that require a specific Exemption from the Air Navigation Order are addressed via a more traditional ‘paper based’ application form, the SRG 1320.

SQL queries can get complex in a big hurry. If you are querying multiple tables, and in particular if your query involves operations like UNION and INTERSECT, then you can find yourself in a big, messy pile of SQL. Worse, that big pile will often run slowly, sometimes to the point where a web application times out! I won’t inflict a real-world example on you; that would be cruel. So let’s look at a “toy” problem, keeping in mind that this won’t illustrate any time-savings, just the technique involved.

Discover how PHP 5.5 enables more-secure password handling. PHP, from the beginning, was a programming language made for building websites. That idea is in PHP's core far deeper than in any other programming language — perhaps one reason why PHP became and remains so popular for building web applications. But when PHP was first crafted in the mid-1990s, the term web application didn't even exist yet. Password protection, then, wasn't one of the features that the PHP creators devoted resources to. After all, you didn't need to worry about passwords when you used PHP just to put a site-visit counter or a date-modified stamp on your web page. But 20 years have passed, and now it's almost unthinkable to create a web application that doesn't involve password-protected user accounts. It's of the utmost importance that PHP programmers safeguard account passwords by using the latest and most secure methods. To that end, PHP 5.5 added a new password-hashing library created by Anthony Ferrara (@ircmaxell). The library makes several functions available that you can use to handle one-way password encryption with current best-practice methods. Other features anticipate future security needs so that as computers and hackers get more advanced, you can stay a step ahead of the bad guys. This article gives you an in-depth introduction to the library's functions and how to make the best use of them.

This tutorial assumes no previous knowledge of scripting or programming, yet progresses rapidly toward an intermediate/advanced level of instruction... all the while sneaking in little nuggets of UNIX® wisdom and lore. It serves as a textbook, a manual for self-study, and as a reference and source of knowledge on shell scripting techniques. The exercises and heavily-commented examples invite active reader participation, under the premise that the only way to really learn scripting is to write scripts. This book is suitable for classroom use as a general introduction to programming concepts. This document is herewith granted to the Public Domain. No copyright!

This tutorial shows how write a MoSync Hybrid App that invokes a small piece of C++ code to open web sites in a new window (activity). This is useful if you for example wish to open Google Maps from your application. The source code for this tutorial is available on GitHub. Background In a Hybrid App, there is a WebView widget that displays HTML content. This WebView is not a fully featured browser in terms of navigation support, cookies etc. When opening a link (e.g. by clicking on it) the target is opened in the same WebView. This can cause problems, for example if you wish to navigate back to the original page displayed in the WebView. Complex web sites may work less well in the embedded WebView widget compared to the full web browser on the device.

Although information visualization (infovis) technologies have proven indispensable tools for making sense of complex data, wide-spread deployment has yet to take hold, as successful infovis applications are often difficult to author and require domain-specific customization. To address these issues, we have created prefuse, a software framework for creating dynamic visualizations of both structured and unstructured data. prefuse provides theoretically-motivated abstractions for the design of a wide range of visualization applications, enabling programmers to string together desired components quickly to create and customize working visualizations. To evaluate prefuse we have built both existing and novel visualizations testing the toolkit's flexibility and performance, and have run usability studies and usage surveys finding that programmers find the toolkit usable and effective.

LED light systems offer exceptional reliability and superior light yield vs standard bicycle light systems. This is an evolutionary tutorial on how to power such systems from a dynamo. As you read, you will come across a variety of circuits that can be built at home. The following projects heavily use power LEDs. They are typically made by manufacturers such as Philips-Lumileds, Cree, Seoul Semiconductor. At the time of writing, these LEDs are subject of rapid improvement. In 6 months from now, a new model of power LED will probably make todays most advanced LEDs look dim. There could even be new manufacturers pushing on the market with superiour LEDs. Due to this, I never recommend any specific part number for the LEDs. The driver circuits are not affected by the type of LED used, as long as it has the typical forward voltage of a white LED.
