Entering the Harbour

Saved by uncleflo on January 17th, 2022.

To assist the safe passage of small craft to and from Portsmouth Harbour a Small Boat Channel for vessels less than 20m in length including Personal Watercraft (PWC) has been created on the western side of the harbour entrance. The 50 metre wide Small Boat Channel is shown on Admiralty charts 2625 and 2631. Its northern and southern extremities are at Ballast Pile (50 47.62N 001 06.83W) and No 4 Bar Buoy (50 46.97N 001 06.48W) respectively. Small boats are reminded that they can be difficult to see and the harbour entrance is a blind bend to larger vessels and traffic leaving the camber. Vessels approaching or departing the small boat channel to the south, should follow the line of the port lateral boys to avoid grounding on the South-East corner of Hamilton bank. The following vessels under 20m in length are authorised to use the main channel and loiter in the Small Boat Channel when their duties require; pilot boats, police launches, QHM Harbour Patrol launches, Border Force craft, Royal Naval vessels, lifeboats, senior officers’ boats flying official flags or discs and tugs engaged in towing operations or escorting a vessel. Small boats may continue to use the Small Boat Channel when the main channel is closed for the passage of a large vessel other than a Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) Aircraft Carrier. The Small Boat Channel will be shut to all traffic during QEC transits.

Saved by uncleflo on December 22nd, 2019.

The AgustaWestland Project Zero is a hybrid tiltrotor/Lift fan aircraft. It has been developed by AgustaWestland as a technology demonstrator, and is used to investigate all-electric propulsion and other advanced technologies. It is the world's first electric tiltrotor aircraft. In December 2010, AgustaWestland's management approved the formation of a team under James Wang with the intention of producing a technology demonstrator incorporating as many new innovations as possible on a single airframe. Speaking in 2013, Wang noted that electric technologies were rapidly advancing, and that the function of Project Zero was to achieve readiness with electric aircraft technologies: "Rather than waiting for the battery to become even better, then working on electric aircraft technology, the team has positioned itself to be ready for the next generation of batteries".

Saved by uncleflo on November 27th, 2018.

Congratulations on being a new drone pilot! We all understand the excitement of getting a new drone. But don’t rush into flying just yet! It’s relatively straightforward to take off, but do you know every button’s function or have a good understanding of how your drone reacts to the remote controller? Before you head out and get it in the air, you should know your drone well. As it’s the best way to prevent crashes and flyaways. Furthermore, it’s being responsible for the safety of yourself, others, and your drone. Operating a drone can sometimes be tricky. So to avoid any silly missteps, it’s essential to read the product’s manual and get familiar with DJI’s GO apps and pay close attention to preflight preparations. After you understand your drone’s capabilities and limitations choose a safe test flight zone and practice some basic maneuvers before you take the leash off. Additionally, remember to take advantage of free online resources. You can find all you need to know and do before your maiden flight on the DJI Support and DJI Tutorials YouTube channels. Finally, if any problem occurs, you can always contact DJI Support on Facebook or Twitter for help. Here, we’ve summarized 15 tips to help first-time drone pilots prepare for their air adventures.

Applications for unmanned aircraft operational authorisations

https://www.caa.co.uk/Commercial-industry/Aircraft/Unmanned-aircraft/Small-drones/Applications-for-unmanned-aircraft-operational-authorisations/

Saved by uncleflo on November 27th, 2018.

The process to follow when applying to the CAA for an operational authorisation (a permission or an exemption) depends on the relative complexity of the authorisation that you are seeking: Applications for relatively ‘simple’ operational authorisations, which are commonly referred to as a ‘Standard Permission’, are addressed via an online application process: A ‘Standard Permission’ enables a person to conduct commercial operations with a small unmanned aircraft (drone) and also permits operations within a congested area. Applicants will be required to provide all documents and payment online (credit /debit card only ) before submitting their application. Applications for more complex operational authorisations, commonly referred to as ‘Non-Standard Permissions’, or those that require a specific Exemption from the Air Navigation Order are addressed via a more traditional ‘paper based’ application form, the SRG 1320.

They hover and skim above the water at speeds of up to 250 miles an hour, while carrying heavier loads of cargo and troops than any airplane could - the Ekranoplans, or "Wing-in-Ground" (WIG) vehicles are possibly the most exciting and strange-looking transportation technology ever invented by men. Developed mostly by the Soviets during the Cold War (by the Rostislav Alexeev design firm), some ekranoplans were over 500 feet in length and had the estimated weight of over 500 tons! And yet they skimmed over the waves with grace, at high speeds, able to negotiate stormy conditions, and unseen by the radar - all thanks to the aerodynamic principle known as the "ground effect".

Eta Aircraft - Soaring above all others

Saved by uncleflo on June 1st, 2013.
