Putting Raspberry Pi boards into space is nothing new, but the method of achieving orbit often differs. While the Astro Pi computers headed for the final frontier onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, there are some decidedly lower-tech approaches including, as detailed on the Tindie blog, this $45 RP2040 flight computer from Finnish designer Dan Invents. Combining the RP2040 controller with an altimeter, accelerometer, temperature sensor, and enough juice to power two servo motors (for parachute deployment on the way down), the Rockit (rocket operation computing kit) weighs just 0.18oz (5g) and measures 1.73 x 0.9 x 0.35 inches (44 x 22 x 9 mm). It comes with an open-source firmware pre-installed, and can be tinkered with and updated over micro USB. There's a 16-position rotary switch for adjusting parameters such as start and end positions for the servos, and also a buzzer, so you can more easily find your rocket after a successful landing. Compared to the 2MHz Apollo guidance computer that deposited Neil Armstrong on the Moon, the RP2040 is a powerhouse, and should be more than capable of altitude-based parachute opening and logging flight data from the sensors to a micro SD card. The kit, which costs $44.99, comes with just the board and its pin headers - you need to supply your own battery, servos, cabling, micro SD card and space suit.

When picking a switch to use in electrical design, many people believe they can use any switch, provided its current rating is more than the maximum load in the circuit. This, of course, isn’t true. Alternating current (ac) or direct current (dc) circuits are capable of carrying very different currents, as illustrated by the ratings on the switch in Figure 1. Safety Update: If the cells have a voltage difference of more than .2 of a volt (example: one cell is 2.7 volts, and another cell is 3.5 volts), you should not parallel connect, and instead discharge the higher voltage cell with a 25-50 watt, 1.5-2.7 ohm resistor. Just attach the leads of the resistor to the individual higher voltage cell, and wait till it is at a voltage that is closer to the other cells. When they are within .2 volts of each other, then you can connect them in parallel and allow them to equalize. Another way to do this is to charge the lower voltage cells, but 3 volt chargers are not easy to find, so I would stick to the resistor method. These resistors only cost a dollars each, and you can find them at most electronics supply stores.

The L298 is an integrated monolithic circuit in a 15-lead Multiwatt and PowerSO20 packages. It is a high voltage, high current dual full-bridge driver designed to accept standard TTL logic levels and drive inductive loads such as relays, solenoids, DC and stepping motors. Two enable inputs are provided to enable or disable the device independently of the input signals. The emitters of the lower transistors of each bridge are connected together and the corresponding external terminal can be used for the connection of an external sensing resistor. An additional supply input is provided so that the logic works at a lower voltage.

This example make use of the circuitikz and siunitx packages for drawing a 18W MOSFET Amplifier for one-channel. You need to have those packages installed for compiling. During the last five days I added fifteen examples to the gallery. Some were sent by email (thank you!), some are from the TeX.SE and TeXwelt.de sites, question and answer sites with creative commons license. I bookmarked nice examples I noticed, and from time to time I’m adding such drawings here, with backlink to the original post. Now the gallery shows 371 drawings.

This instructable explains how to build your own 100 HP (peak) motor controller for use in an electric car or motorcycle conversion. It can take any voltage up to 144v, and the peak current is 500 amps. The cost of the components is a few hundred dollars, which means you can save over $1000 by putting one together yourself. At 144v, you can expect a top speed of around 75 MPH in a car.
