Christian Red explains how to treat jute rope for shibari. Treating your own jute rope is a lot more cost effective than buying rope that's been pre-treated, it also allows you to finish the rope to your own tastes. The process shows how to remove jute batching oil (JBO), soften the jute, smooth and polish the surface and burn off the stray fuzzy hairs. Illustrations by Cherry Blossom. Please note that this an educational video intended for general information. We strongly advise against practicing anything shown in our videos without the guidance of a trained professional.

In this class, Hajime Kinoko teaches his Hip Harness for suspension with his model Maya Homerton. Function meets form in this intermediate level harness. Kinoko’s hip harness is designed in such a way that it enables comfortable suspensions for every body types without demanding a high level of flexibility. It offers sturdy hip support and reduces waist load (as opposed to Gorgone’s hip-harness designed for models with more back flexibility and who enjoy waist load), making it ideal if you’re looking to take some pressure off the lower back in bridge positions. This versatile tie is ideal for inversions and bridges and is solid enough to sustain dynamic transitions and self-suspensions. Further information regarding the suspension line: Kinoko's suspension line method for this tie is very simplified to allow the rigger to attach it easily and quickly during transition work (e.g. while the model is in a face-down and needs support quickly) and prioritizes efficiency over symmetry and balance. If you prefer, you can also use a normal Epsilon instead of the anchoring demonstrated in this tutorial.

Shibari is the Japanese practice of rope binding, with roots in visual art, theatre, and erotic culture. Though often mythologised, it is a relatively modern practice that has grown into a form of rope play where one person ties another, exploring restraint, power exchange, and trust. Today, it is embraced worldwide as both an intimate practice and a visual art, suited to many kinds of relationships — from couples to friendships.

We also offer private lessons for individuals, couples, and small groups, and are currently expanding our offerings to include holistic 1:1 rope experiences and therapeutic sessions that integrate embodiment, mindfulness, and connection. Tiger Nawa – Matteo’s journey with rope began in early childhood as a sailor, long before he entered the world of Japanese rope arts. His formal study of Traditional Kinbaku traces its lineage from the martial discipline of Hojojutsu and the aesthetics of Kabuki theatre, through the Japanese Kinbaku scene shaped by masters such as Osada Eikichi, Yukimura Haruki, Osada Steve, Nureki Chimuo, and Kazami Ranki, Akechi Denki. From this rich lineage, Matteo developed Tiger Nawa Ryū: a unique style blending Aibu and Seme Nawa, a form he calls Romantic Seme Nawa. It is a holistic and innovative approach rooted in mindfulness, presence, creativity, and deep relational awareness. Beyond ropes, Matteo is an artist, filmmaker, yoga teacher, and sound healer with over two decades of multidisciplinary experience, all of which inform the depth and sensitivity of his rope work.

is the emptiness or interval between physical objects, as seen in Japanese painting, ikebana, and architectural design. This "empty" space allows the important elements to stand out and the composition to breathe. In traditional theater, music, and human interactions, ma is the interval—a deliberate silence or pause—that shapes rhythm and emotional response. Ma is not simply a void or lack, but the relational space that connects and balances everything. It is as much about what is not present as what is. This balance generates beauty, harmony, and possibility. Ma is sometimes described as “an emptiness full of possibilities, like a promise yet to be fulfilled,” and “the silence between the notes which make the music”. Ma isn't just about physical space, but also about giving time, energy, and room to grow, think, and create. For us, it shapes and guides our practice as it allows for true connection to grow between people. It guides the rhythm and flow where each gesture and each pause becomes an act of mutual creation. Ma also captures our intention to carry forward the focus on traditional styles while also expanding the space’s creative horizons. Our vision is to offer classes and workshops in a variety of styles, energies, and approaches — as well as providing space for complementary practices that enrich learning, broaden expression, and nurture creativity.

A friendly but professional, family run business with an old fashioned approach to sales & customer service, situated on the waterfront of the delightful market town and boating centre of Woodbridge in Suffolk. Andy arrived in Woodbridge from the Midlands in the early 70’s to join his parents who had moved there some years before. Boating had always been the family hobby and he soon realised that whilst you could order your yacht from one of the local yards, there was nowhere to buy a dinghy to hang on the davits! He soon set about "plugging the gap" and acquired a premises on the Quayside and began buying and selling tenders, small fishing boats, sailing dinghies & day boats. His intention was to bring boating to "everyman" and his early adverts boasted that he could "get you sailing or motoring down the river for less than £500". Several thousand boat sales later it seems he was right! The business went from strength to strength and the range and size of boats he offered grew dramatically and now he has over 70 boats on display at any time, from dinghies to ocean going yachts – canoes to 40’ cruisers.

Rope makers seem to delight in confusing us with science and/or extraordinary polysyllabic names. Let me try to cut through the guff a little. Also known as Terylene or Dacron, polyester is the stuff from which most “ordinary” rope and line is made of. It is resistant to rot and ultra-violet (UV), sinks in water and comes in a variety of constructions: 3-strand pre-stretched - can be spliced in the normal fashion, though it is a good idea to use 4 or 5 tucks instead of the 3 used in natural fibre ropes. The “pre-stretch” refers to an extra tweak imparted during the making of the rope which makes it more suitable for halyards and bell ropes. Very important, that - could you imagine the cacophony which would result from using stretchy rope? The snag with this construction is that it can kink, so it’s unusual to use it as a sheet.
