To assist the safe passage of small craft to and from Portsmouth Harbour a Small Boat Channel for vessels less than 20m in length including Personal Watercraft (PWC) has been created on the western side of the harbour entrance. The 50 metre wide Small Boat Channel is shown on Admiralty charts 2625 and 2631. Its northern and southern extremities are at Ballast Pile (50 47.62N 001 06.83W) and No 4 Bar Buoy (50 46.97N 001 06.48W) respectively. Small boats are reminded that they can be difficult to see and the harbour entrance is a blind bend to larger vessels and traffic leaving the camber. Vessels approaching or departing the small boat channel to the south, should follow the line of the port lateral boys to avoid grounding on the South-East corner of Hamilton bank. The following vessels under 20m in length are authorised to use the main channel and loiter in the Small Boat Channel when their duties require; pilot boats, police launches, QHM Harbour Patrol launches, Border Force craft, Royal Naval vessels, lifeboats, senior officers’ boats flying official flags or discs and tugs engaged in towing operations or escorting a vessel. Small boats may continue to use the Small Boat Channel when the main channel is closed for the passage of a large vessel other than a Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) Aircraft Carrier. The Small Boat Channel will be shut to all traffic during QEC transits.

The bomber and flight jackets were first produced with an intention of providing some lightweight work wear that would be suitable in every way for the military personnel. They have a timeline record which shows the changes in style and modifications that have occurred in their design. Flight jackets have seen design modifications from the time of invention when they were mainly produced for use by the military men, to contemporary times where they now qualify for use as cool casual outfits for almost anybody. At AVI LEATHER we have done our best to create a compilation of the some of the most important flight jackets that have been, together with their basic descriptions and some illustrations.

The area described stretches from Southend Pier to Hole Haven Creek, and is home to a couple of thousand shoal draft yachts and other shallow craft. These are either moored off the foreshore or tucked up in the muddy little creeks. One thing they all have in common is that they take the ground when the tide leaves (except perhaps for a few fishing boats moored at Holehaven and in Ray Gut). In general the area is not suitable for deeper draft fin keelers, except for a couple of temporary anchorages, a long way from any facilities. The town of Southend is fronted by extensive drying mud flats that reach almost to the end of the pier. A deepwater gutway runs inwards towards Leigh on Sea and branches off a short way to Smallgains Creek, which houses a boatyard with mud berth moorings at the eastern extremity of Canvey Island. Another arm continues past Two Tree Island where many small craft are moored in semi shelter and then winds and twists it's way up Benfleet Creek, where there are two yacht clubs with extensive drying moorings and a boatyard, (that nestle in total shelter no matter what the wind is doing).

In addition to the UK’s civil and military aerodromes, there are hundreds of smaller, grass airfields set up by private individuals (termed ‘farm strips’). If you own suitable land, it’s possible to set up your own – of course, planning restrictions and practical considerations apply. We outline some of them here. Naturally, we suggest you obtain professional advice before flying from your land – however, if you do own a suitable portion of real estate, you can operate your aircraft from it for up to 28 days per year without planning permission, providing it’s safe to do. If the usage exceeds that, then you’ll need to apply to your Local Authority for change of use permission. Airfields operating under the 28 day rule are classified as ‘unlicensed fields’. This isn’t to say they’re illegal, but rather that they haven’t been subject to a Civil Aviation Authority survey; which quantifies and assesses approach obstacles, runway surfaces & length, and so forth. Your farm strips is therefore likely to be more challenging to fly in and out of – but, as most farm strip flyers will tell you, therein lies the challenge!

Drones are big business, and thousands of you would have received your very own for Christmas this year. The plummeting cost of components and the ease of buying remote controlled aircraft off the Internet has skyrocketed the use of consumer drones across the globe. Headlines are made every day, whether that’s new drones at CES, drones almost hitting passenger jets, or drones spying on unassuming victims. The CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) has already prosecuted two drone operators in the UK for breaching safety regulations, with numerous other investigations ongoing. In October, a man was arrested for operating a drone over Manchester City’s football stadium in a match with Tottenham Hotspur.

It’s relatively straightforward to take off, but do you know every button’s function or have a good understanding of how your drone reacts to the remote controller? Before you head out and get it in the air, you should know your drone well. As it’s the best way to prevent crashes and flyaways. Furthermore, it’s being responsible for the safety of yourself, others, and your drone. Operating a drone can sometimes be tricky. So to avoid any silly missteps, it’s essential to read the product’s manual and get familiar with DJI’s GO apps and pay close attention to preflight preparations. After you understand your drone’s capabilities and limitations choose a safe test flight zone and practice some basic maneuvers before you take the leash off. After taking you inside the Air Force's investigation into the crash of a B-2 stealth bomber, PopularMechanics.com has obtained the first still photos of the February accident—and they're pretty stunning. With last month's technical report detailing the demise of the Spirit of Kansas came footage from security cameras at Andersen Air Force base in Guam. Officials also snapped—but, until now, did not release—still photos of that crash site. In the pictures, firefighters work in silvery suits and crash teams cautiously approach the empty ejection seats, which use explosive charges to gain distance from a foundering airplane. Both pilots were able to eject safely through panels in the airplane's cockpit roof. The white spray seen in the photos is fire suppression foam.
